The art and desire for music that drives the creation of all my instruments has spilled over into the surroundings of the shop during the last fifty years.
A few years ago I happened upon a mountainside littered with huge chunks of marble at a point near Marble, Colorado where the train tracks met the mule trains coming down from the Yule Marble Mine at 10,000 feet. These chunks of marble were destined for the Lincoln Memorial created between 1914-1922.
As luck would have it, some huge boulders were still at the train depot (now long gone) in 2010 after being mined in 1906. After negotiations with the landowner who engaged the services of one of the giant trailer trucks that still come down the mountain loaded with marble, I obtained seven pieces of marble weighing up to three tons apiece.
The next year I spent carving in the age-old rock-art tradition dating back to prehistoric times. My intention was to create a record of the human musical tradition dating from the 1600s to the 21st century.
